After a racing start to the week with our own gig at Hillsborough Folk Club, we are finishing it in fine style at Oxford Folk Festival in our other guises as members of Bellowhead and the Demon Barbers.

Busy, busy week

Phew! It’s been a busy week already in the Hannah and Sam camp.

Hillsborough folk club

First there was a lovely gig at Hillsborough Folk club. Our first gig together for a while. Many thanks to Pete Shaw for the invite and to our lovely audience for the company. It is a really nice venue at Burton St, cosy, intimate and with a good bar of course, so if you are in Sheffield on a Tuesday check it out.

Next we caught our good friends the Askew Sisters as they performed at the Rivelin Folk club last night to promote their new album. If you have chance to see them on their current tour and enjoy it, you might also enjoy a new trio, Lady Maisery featuring a certain Miss Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans.

Lady Maisery

In fact the trio will be performing on 24th April in Ashover. More on that later.

Finally and it is another Sheffield event (isn’t it great we have all this on our doorstep?). Get yourselves down to the Boardwalk tonight for Nancy Kerr and James Fagan plus the Boardwalk Allstars. This is part of a series of events set up by Fay Hield and Kit Bailey that will happen at regular intervals throughout the year with different acts headlining, but with the MIGHT of the Allstars behind them! The Allstars tonight will include Martin Simpson, Jon Boden, Roy Bailey and harmonica whizz Will Pound. Another not to be missed event brought to you by the city of steel!

Make sure you also check out our good friends the Demon Barber Roadshow and Fay Heild trio. You might see someone you recognise.

We may have left empty handed from the folk awards, but we are delighted to have won  the  Horizon Award for best newcomers at the Hancock awards! The Hancock awards (aka ‘Not the BBC Folk Awards’) are set up and voted for by the good folk at Talkawhile, so many thanks to everyone who voted for us!

Remember you still have time to vote for us at the Spiral awards

No win, but great time had by all!

Unfortunately we came home empty handed from the Folk Awards, but we had a lovely time nonetheless catching up with friends and seeing some excellent live music. Congratulations to the Horizon award winner Sam Carter.

You can listen to us not win and the rest of the awards on the BBC iplayer. Listen out for Sam accepting the best live act award in his role as newest and youngest member of Bellowhead. Didn’t he do well?
